Services We Provide

Everything we offer to keep your pets happy and healthy.

General Services

New Kitten/Puppy Consults

We know getting a new puppy or kitten is an exciting but daunting time. Our team are here to give you all the advice you need on this new exciting journey. We can provide full vaccination courses, or a single 2nd vaccination when the breeder has already started the course (please call us to check the first vaccine is compatible with ours), wormer, flea treatment and in-depth advice about neutering, behaviour, feeding and much more.

We also offer puppy and kitten plans to help you through the first 6 months of their lives – ask the team for more details.

Consultations

We know that the smallest things can worry you about your pets and we are here to put your mind at rest with those concerns. Whether it be a general wellness check or a specific problem, we are always happy to help.

We offer consultations Monday–Saturday and we always aim to accommodate you wherever possible. Our consultations are all 15 minutes long to give us enough time to collect a thorough history, examine your pet and dish out lots of treats! Call us on 01845 444681 to book.

Vaccinations

It’s important that we protect our pets wherever we can and we believe keeping up to date with vaccinations is the key to this.

  • Dogs: distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis and 4 strains of leptospirosis
  • Cats: feline calicivirus, feline viral rhinotracheitis and feline panleucopenia virus
  • Rabbits: myxomatosis and rabbit viral haemorrhagic diarrhoea

We offer primary vaccination courses and we recommend annual boosters – which are free of charge on our silver or gold health plan.

Flea and Worm Treatments

For our team prevention is key – we would much rather keep your pet happy and healthy, but every pet is different. Our focus is on providing treatments for each individual pet specific to their needs while ensuring they are safe from parasites.

All flea and worm treatment is also covered in both our silver and gold health plans.

Neutering

Neutering is the surgical removal of the sex organs of your dog or cat. We call this spay for girls and castration for boys.

Cats can be neutered from 4 months old and at any point during their season if they are girls.

The age for neutering your dog really varies depending on the breed and the choice of allowing your girls to have a season or not is also breed specific. We recommend speaking to one of our nurses or vets for the best advice for your pet. However if there has already been a season we recommend spaying 12 weeks after the last day of the season.

Receive 10% off if you sign up to our gold or silver health plans.

Nurse Consults

We have a highly qualified and skilled nursing team who are available Monday–Saturday to provide you with many services including:

  • Clipping nails
  • Anal gland expression
  • Taking blood samples
  • Weight clinics
  • Senior pet clinics
  • Dressing changes
  • Post-op checks
  • Suture removal
  • Dental checks
  • Administration of medications
  • Microchipping
  • Advice on neutering, behaviour, feeding

Dentals

Looking after your pets’ teeth isn’t always easy. If you are struggling speak to one of our nurses who can advise on the best way to brush your pets’ teeth as well as the best supplements to help reduce plaque build up.

Should your pet get to the point that they need a dental we are always happy to help. All dental procedures are completed under general anaesthetic – this is safer for your pet, and we use local anaesthetic alongside should teeth need to be removed. Initially all teeth will be scaled and polished and at this point we will complete dental x-rays to assess all tooth roots and crowns. After the x-rays have been completed any extractions can be carried out.

Dentals are charged on an individual basis and by overall time the dental takes (not number of teeth). Estimates will include FOC fluids and dental kits and all pain relief and post-op checks.

Emergencies

During our opening hours we will always take in any emergency. We have a vet on site from 8.30am–6.30pm Monday–Friday and Saturday 8.30am–12noon. Should your pet be with us but then require overnight care we will arrange with you to transfer your pet to your preferred out of hours hospital.

Out of those hours you can call our number and then select to be transferred to either:

  • Medivet Thirsk – Lumley Close, Thirsk YO7 3TD – +44 1845 522297
  • Wear Referrals – Bradbury, Stockton-on-Tees TS21 2ES – +44 1388 777770
  • Swift Referrals – Unit 706 Ave E W, Wetherby LS23 7GA – +44 1937 374888

Home Visits

We understand that not all patients enjoy coming to the practice and in some cases not all clients. Maybe you feel your pet would be less stressed at home or you simply can’t leave the house. If this is the case then please get in touch with reception – we offer a wide variety of services during home visits including vaccinations, routine health checks, microchipping, administering medication, blood sampling and more.

Pet Travel

We offer rabies vaccinations, flea/worm treatments and can provide animal health certificates for travel throughout the world. When it comes to animal travel the key is to get in touch with us as soon as you know you need to travel your pet – different countries have different requirements for travel. We will always help to the best of our ability but we would advise you follow the advice on the government website.

Prescriptions

Although you can collect all your prescription-only medications from the practice we appreciate some people may wish to order these medications elsewhere.

Not all medications can be provided on prescription and there are strict laws to which we must abide. As veterinary surgeons we can only prescribe to patients “under our care” which means we must have seen your pet within the last 6 months for a health check and to ensure that there are no contraindications to continuing their medication.

Our medication check-up fee is £26.50 and after this check we will generally provide a 6-month prescription but again we are not legally able to do this for all medications e.g. controlled drugs like gabapentin can only be prescribed one month at a time.

Our prescription charge is £17.50. This covers the professional time of the vet in reviewing the health records, assessing your pet’s current response to medication, authorising appropriate ongoing medication and updating and maintaining the necessary pharmacy records, in addition to the administrative costs associated with issuing the prescription.

End of Life Care

When the time comes to say that final goodbye we are here to help you and your pet through your journey together. This is often an emotional time and our vets are available to speak to if you are considering whether or not it is the right time to be saying goodbye.

Everybody and every patient is unique and what works for one will not for another so we will tailor the process to you and we can offer home visits if you feel your pet would be more comfortable at home.

Book the appointment in advance wherever possible – we always aim to book these appointments in quiet times, so you can solely focus on your pet. Bring with you any bedding, toys or treats that will help make your pet feel more comfortable and bring as many people as you need with you, family and children welcome.

On arrival you will be taken to a private room and given a few minutes to spend time with your pet should you wish. We can arrange communal cremation or individual cremation with ashes returned in a variety of boxes/caskets/urns, whereas burial you would need to organise yourself and take your pet home. We can also offer fur clippings and paw prints.

There is no rush, no time limit and we urge you to take as much or as little time as you need through this process.
